Birth Of Modern Horror

Edgar Allan Poe an american author influenced by classical and gothic tales. He was one of the main influences in modern horror, He created elements of horror within his stories which was influenced by psychological and physical events in his life. He suffered many tragedies throughout his life; death of his mother when he was born which led to him to become an orphan and death of his first wife.
Poe died in 1848, his death was a mystery. Although it was a mystery many speculate it could have been related to alcohol and drugs as he was a heavy user of the two. 


Poe is famous for the The Raven, a narrative poem. First published in January 1845, the poem is often known for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow descent into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references.

Edward Hopper

Film Noir, a cinematic term used to describe Hollywood based crime dramas. Dramas that consist of cynical attitudes and sexual motivation. Film Noir started in the 1940's till the 1950's mainly associated with hints of black, greys and whites. Film Noir has German expressionist cinematography. Many Film Noir stories derive from the hard-boiled school of crime and fiction that emerged from the U.S in the depression.

The Nighthawk painting is probably the most famous painting in the art world. Edward Hopper was the pioneer who created this painting. Hoppers paintings where current to the time period, his work became an influentional aspect into the development of film Noir. However this gave way to the film noir era, the detective and his sidekick, the girl and the common location. In this painting we see two detectives, a woman and the diner waiter. There is no real story within the painting, its more of an open for interpretation kind of painting, with the use of light and shadow. I think that the main detective with the woman his had an arguement with this sidekick, but being the higher ranked out of the two the main detective has the attention of the woman and possibly the waiter.

1930's Inspired Poster

This is a poster of the 2 Grand Prix in Monaco. You can see how the image has lines to make it look fast and more streamline. The background is of a stationary image of a mountain, the colours used in the background give more depth to the image of the moving car. Everything within the cars area is shown to be moving at a fast speed because of the lines and colours used. Alot of bright and vibrant colours are used in this poster as the point and reason is to draw the viewer into the poster. 

1930's Art Deco

The Art Deco movement started in the 1920's and was more prominent in the 1930's. It was first exhibited at the French Exhibition of Glasswear and then became a mainstream sensation in America and Great Britian. America at the time had an obsession with speed whicch then  further developed Art Deco into a more streamline and aerodynamic form. Alot of the architecture was inspired by this movement because of the organic forms and was used for more of a aesthetic choice. Art Deco drew most of its inspiration from the ancient Egyptians and Aztec forms, this was mainly a decorative movement unlike most art movement which are political or philosophically driven.
This poster is a perfect example of Art Deco, the geometric shapes used to create images, the use of flat colours but at the same time using different shades of said colour to create a gradient or a shade on the image. Alot of bright colours are used in Art Deco based posters and art pieces, as the reason is to attract and draw the viewers eye into the piece of art.

Utopia And Dystopia

I chose Dante's Inferno as the Dystopia this was made in the 14th century, these were etchings made on metal plates illustrated by Gustov Dores. The book was of the nine circles of hell within earth, each circle depicts the journey our souls we would suffer for what ever sin we commited. Every circle gets worse and worse.
Even though this is of a more religious type of Dystopia this is still something that is embeded into our heads, the unknown of what may happen when we all die.

Utopia And Dystopia

So on today's topic we have chosen Utopia and Dystopia, for "Utopia" i would have to say the ideas created by Sir Thomas Moore presented in his book "Utopia" as the name suggests it is of his perfect world a peninsula 15 miles wide. The idea of having a land with no rules or crimes is pretty much every ones Utopia, most of his ideas went away from the teachings of the catholic church in which he was raised. In a way Utopia is sometimes rebelling against from what we have been taught.

3rd Typography

For my final choice of good typography is of the title for the Avatar movie. I like the use of what looks like tribal font, it isnt clean and crisp, the lines aremt perfectly straight but the font is easliy able to be depicted. The colours used link in with the movie so it all blends well together.

For my second choice of good typography i chose this banner which is full of different emotions, the way each emotion is written is in the style the emotion presents its self.

This is my first choice of good typography, it a banner for deviant art. I like the use of the words that create the "d" and "A" the words themselves are of the different types of art and emotions the art presents.

Industrial Revolution & Steam Punk

The industrial revolution started in 1750 till 1850, beginning in UK the revolution started to spread throughout the Western Europe, North American and Japan and eventually the world.   During this period of time many changes occurred in different areas of the working industry; agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation and technology. All these industries had an effect on the social, economic and cultural conditions of life. 


The start of the industrial revolution was also the starting point of the idea of what the future would hold. That is when steam punk started, the ideas of what was being created during the industrial revolution was further "evolved" to create the final ideas of steam punk. There were many ideas that the industrial revolution fuelled, like the airships, a flying machine most known to be a ship but made of  cogs and powered by steam as they were the materials used at the time.

The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello (Personal Opinion)

The short movie "The Mysterious Exploration of Jasper Morello" started in a sepia coloured style. There was a big steam punk influence through out the movie, which was shown by the way the people and buildings looked. The images in the short film were made into silhouettes, the people had small amounts of details but were still in silhouette. I liked the dark and gothic style theme throught out the movie. There was colour within the movie, it was mostly in the background but it put more emphasis on the objects in the foreground. The only point when the people had colour or detail was when they were inflected by the sickness which was the main part if the short film.
I would say the short film had a small message that ran through out the film, it was constantly asking the purpose of man and what we do to give purpose in our lives. This was shown by the trials the main character Jasper Morello was presented by.
